Amir Muhammad
Amir Muhammad is a Malaysian filmmaker and writer, born in Kuala Lumpur on 5 December 1972. He has a law degree but does not use it.
In 2000, he wrote and directed Lips to Lips, Malaysia’s first digital-video feature. He went on to co-found Da Huang Pictures and became a key figure in the Malaysian independent film movement.
His work ranges from fiction and experimental films to documentaries, including The Big Durian, The Last Communist, Village People Radio Show, Malaysian Gods and Voyage to Terengganu, co-directed with Badrul Hisham Ismail. The Last Communist and Village People Radio Show were banned in Malaysia.
Sharp, witty and difficult to categorise, his films approach Malaysian history and everyday life through unexpected encounters and a distinctive sense of humour.
