The Story Behind Lonely Island

在陀螺电影的专访里，采访者问了我很多关于创作的问题。有很多背后的故事还没有分享过。有件小事是我一直想提起的。
In an interview with Tuoluo Film, the interviewer asked me many questions about my creative process. There are many behind-the-scenes stories I have never shared. There is one small thing I have always wanted to mention.

我们在拍摄开始前进行排练的时候，曾经救过一只小猫。是一只小阿比，叫“小卡”。因为那家人前一天刚搬进去，还没有来得及封窗，调皮的小猫从阳台上掉了下来，满嘴都是血。我们一起送小猫去了宠物医院，并且在网上开始寻找主人，后来通过网上发帖找到了主人，她听到这个噩耗的时候还在睡觉，她被朋友的电话吵醒，骑车迅速赶来。小猫在氧舱里一直抽搐，做了ct以后医生说小猫的胰脏破裂，现在开刀风险很大，基本上没有挽救余地。

While we were rehearsing before shooting began, we once saved a kitten. She was a little Abyssinian named Xiao Ka. The family had just moved in the day before and had not yet had time to secure the windows, so the mischievous kitten fell from the balcony into the parking lot, and her mouth was covered in blood. We took her to the vet together and started looking for her owner online. Later, we found the owner through social media. When she heard the bad news, she was still asleep; she rushed over immediately. The kitten kept convulsing in the oxygen chamber. After a CT scan, the doctor said her pancreas had ruptured. Surgery would be very risky at that point—and there was basically no chance of saving her.

小卡最后的十分钟，我和她的主人站在医院的手术室里看着年轻的护士给她擦身子、擦嘴巴上的血，没有忍住哭了出来。我见过很多离别，但每一次都是一种新的伤痛。
In Xiao Ka’s final ten minutes, her owner and I stood in the hospital’s operating room watching a young nurse wipe her body and the blood from her mouth, and we could not hold back our tears. I have seen many partings, but each one is a new kind of pain.

这件事很快就过去了，走出宠物医院的时候大街上很喧嚣，飞驰而过的汽车带起的尘土呛的令人皱眉头，但这个世界再也没有这只小猫了。
This incident passed quickly. When we walked out of the vet’s office, the street was as noisy as always; speeding cars kicked up dust. But Xiao Ka was gone forever.

一开始剧本的故事更像是电影里“李总”所描述的三个女孩的故事。后来，当我们的拍摄进行不下去而导致停拍时，我在那时候的压力下要立刻写出一个新的内容去进行拍摄，我问自己问题，在当下这个时刻，什么东西对我来说是最想表达的？之前的剧本里，郑源与父亲的关系，方迟作为演员经历的创伤，赵欣在进大公司写商业故事和自我表达中摇摆不定，这三条线里，“去找小猫”好像是一件最小的事。可是现在要重新写一个故事时，我却一直忘不了小卡最后的眼神。所以最后我决定把这条故事线保留下来并且进行了删改，三个女孩去赵欣前任在秦皇岛开的民宿里要回小猫。后来，我听到有人讲说去要小猫是一件多么小的事啊，感觉太无足轻重了。但当我自己再一次从银幕上看到三个女孩时，我看到的是我们生命中那些离去的生命，凋落的花，枯萎的树，结束的关系，那些画了句号的故事，以及还在的人，还在这个当下的世界上继续生活的人是如何面对这些或大或小的离别。这个故事不仅只和去找小猫有关，它讲的是我们如何面对失去。

At first, the script’s story was more like the story of the three girls described by “Mr. Li” in the film. Later, when our shoot could not continue and production was halted, under the pressure of that time I had to immediately write something new to shoot. I asked myself: at this moment, what do I most want to express? What are my strongest feelings now?

In the previous script, there were three threads: Zheng Yuan’s relationship with her father; Fang Chi’s trauma as an actress; and Zhao Xin’s wavering between writing commercial stories at a big company and her artistic integrity as a filmmaker. Among these three threads, “looking for the cat” seemed like the smallest thing. But when I had to write a new story, I just couldn’t forget the look in Xiao Ka’s eyes at the end. So in the end I decided to keep this storyline and revise it: three girls go to another city to get the kitten back.

I heard someone say that going to get the cat back seems like such a small thing, but I don’t feel the same way. When I saw the three girls on screen again, I saw lost lives, fallen flowers, withered trees, ended relationships, stories that have been brought to a full stop, and how we face these partings, big or small. This story is not only about going to look for the cat; it is about how we face loss, and how we say goodbye.
